Use: Pain pumps deliver controlled amounts of anesthetics to manage pain after a surgical procedure. They became popular because of the ability to reduce recovery time without side effects of many narcotic pain relievers. Background: A recent study by the American Journal of Sports Medicine identified intraarticular pain pumps as the likely cause of Postarthoscopic Glenohumeral Chondrolysis( PAGCL). PAGCL occurs when the cartilage between the shoulder joint begins to deteriorate, and has no consistently successful treatment, resulting in pain and loss of mobility. PAGCL is one of the most common complications following shoulder surgery, but only occurs in patients who recieved a shoulder pain pump filled with bupicacaine and epinephrine during their surgery. Action Summary: Lawsuits are pending against the various companies that manufacture, market or distribute the pain pumps including Stryker, DJO Inc, I-Flow Inc, and BREG Inc. |
